Guide to Winter Weather Terms
Iowans are no strangers to severe weather. Intense storms can occur any time of the year. At ABC5, we take the weather — and your safety — very seriously and we're proud to be the first and only television station in Central Iowa to be StormReady certified by the National Weather Service.
ABC5 has taken stringent measures to achieve this certification and are ready to keep you informed when dangerous weather is imminent. Our goal is to help you protect your family and your property.
Understanding Winter Weather Terms on ABC5
The National Weather Service winter weather terms we use have precise meanings that everyone should be aware of in order to keep your family safe. Here's a run-down.
Winter Storm Watch — It's possible that severe winter weather could develop in your area but there is still uncertainty as to whether it will develop, and when and where it might occur. A watch is issued 12 to 48 hours before the possibility of a storm so you have time to prepare.
Winter Storm Warning — A watch will be upgraded to a warning when severe weather such as heavy snow, heavy freezing rain, or heavy sleet is imminent or occurring. Warnings are generally issued 12 to 24 hours before the storm begins.
Winter Weather Advisories — An advisory is to inform you that winter weather conditions are severe enough to cause significant inconveniences that could be dangerous. If you are prepared and caution is used, these situations should not be life-threatening.
Blizzard Warning — This warning means that snow and strong winds have combined to produce blinding snow and deep drifts. Life-threatening wind chill may also accompany a blizzard.
Wind Chill — One of the most dangerous elements of severe winter weather, wind chill is based on the rate of heat loss from exposed skin by the effects of combined wind and cold. When winds increase, body heat is lost at an accelerated rate which in turn drives down your body temperature.
